"Am I Saved? is never a wrong question to ask! However, the Lord does not desire you to linger in doubt or dismiss the matter of whether or not you have a relationship with Him.
1 John 5:13 states: "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God." "Know" is first-person present tense indicating the individual is in possession of the object.
So how can we have "know so" salvation? Many people read a Bible passage like Acts 16:30, 31 "Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved..." and assume they are saved because they believe Jesus lived 2000 years ago, did miracles, and died on the cross.
But did you know most people who "believe" in Jesus Christ, are NOT saved or born again? This is because they are "believing" in a historical sense, only acknowledging that Jesus was a person who lived long ago. They are not depending solely upon Jesus for their salvation.
"Believe" as used by Jesus in John's gospel is the Greek word "pisteuo" which is defined as "to trust in, to rely upon." The moment trust in Jesus Christ occurs, a person is "saved" for all eternity.
"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life". John 3:36
Notice in both verses you are not believing in Jesus, but "on" Jesus. This subtle difference shows that passive belief in Jesus is NOT what God requires, but rather, active dependence upon the person & work (His substitutionary death on the cross, His burial, and His rising from the dead to live for evermore) of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Which way are you "believing" in Jesus?
This true story has helped many people see their need for Christ:
During the late 1850's Charles "The Great" Blondin crossed the Niagara river repeatedly on a high-wire suspended high above the Niagara River before enormous crowds on both the U.S. and Canadian sides. One year, Blondin announced he would carry another person across the high wire! The crowds came out and cheered, yet no one in the audience was willing to take the Great Blondin up on his offer and be personally carried across.
The crowd knew in their minds Blondin could do it, but no one was willing to trust Blondin enough to let him carry them across.
Knowing that no one would be willing to be carried, the Great Blondin arranged to carry his business manager, Harry Colcord, across the treacherous river below. Amazingly Blondin instructed Colcord to not assist him in any way during the crossing, rather, Colcord was to simply rest and allow Blondin to carry him across to the other side. After a deliberately cautious crossing, both Blondin and Colcord arrived safely on the other side (actual photo above) to the roar of the crowd. Many "believed", but only one trusted Him to be carried across!
You may be like those in the crowd that day, you "believe" that Jesus lived in history, did miracles, died on the cross and rose from the dead, yet you are not trusting in Him to save you. The Bible declares that until you rely up Jesus to save you (carry you across), you remain in your sins, separated from the Holy God who created you. Acts 4:12
Right now, as you are at your computer or reading this on your phone, why won't you stop and place your trust in Jesus Christ to save you from your sins. Jesus is alive and able to save you because He is the only one qualified to get the job done! Jesus is qualified because only He lived a sinless life, sacrificed Himself on the Cross, was buried, and rose again to live for evermore! 1 Corinthians 15
